Issues in Mission

Course Description

The course will cover Issues in Mission majoring on Contextualization, Pluralism, Social Concern and Development, Leadership. The objective is to encourage thinking and discussion which will assist the student in meeting challenges of ministry in evangelism and church planting. The course will begin with a series of lectures and required reading followed by individual presentations prepared by the student. These will be discussed in class in order to gain more in depth understanding and develop skills in collecting information, analyzing and then applying the knowledge acquired.

Course Objectives

The objective is not merely amass information but to learn how to apply this information to specific challenges and opportunities that arise in mission.

Skills will be developed which will enable the student to:
Collect information, analyse the material against given criteria, seek a solution and then finally present this solution to the other students.

Course Content
The course will have a series of modules:

  • The first module will consist of lectures and readings to gain access to the needed information.
  • The second module will require the student to prepare a presentation along given lines.
  • The third module will be a presentation by each student to the other class members explaining the material and offering a solution to a case study which they have developed.
Course Methodology, Assignments and Grading

The course will consist of lectures, video tapes, assignments, seminars and evaluations in class sessions. This will require Library research and assignments. These assignments will then be presented in seminar sessions leading to evaluation and learning opportunities.

Class Assignments

Case studies dealing with specific challenges encountered in mission will be offered to the student. Each student will accept a case study and prepare a presentation on the issue raised.

A paper is to be prepared on the subject along the following lines:

  • Biblical Background to this subject
  • History of how this subject has been treated and developed.
  • Current position of the Indian Church on this issue.
  • An evaluation of this position
  • Other insights into this issue
  • Suggestions with advantages and disadvantages of a possible course of action.
