Course Description

The course centres on the need for Christians to be more aware of the need to develop a holistic approach to ministryand witness which includes a dimension of social action. A biblical basis for the Cultural Mandate which parallels the Evangelistic Mandate witll be examined laying the foundation for holistic approaches to ministry and evangelism. The link between effective and biblical social concern and the gospel will be looked into. The challenge of the poor, underpriviledged along with responsibility for ecology and a sustainable approach to the environment addressed . Approaches to sustainable development will be discussed. A search for meaningful ways that Churches and Christian groups can be involved in a wider more comprehensive program of outreach will be sought for.

Course Objectives

As a result of studying this course the student will:
Understand the holistic nature of the gospel finding a balance between evangelism and social concern.
Learn how a more comprehensive concern for the whole person can enhance evangelism and gain acceptance amongst people.

Begin to think through useful ways that he or she and his or her Church or Mission group may become involved more meaningfully in evangelism linked with social action.

Course Content

The course will have a series of modules:
  • The first module will deal with the Biblical basis for holistic mission. The cultural and evangelistic mandates will be discussed.
  • The second module will deal with approaches to development and social action.
  • The third module being practical ways that involvement can be entered into.
Course Methodology, Assignments and Grading:

The course will consist of lectures, video tapes, assignments, seminars and evaluations in class sessions.

Assignments

Any videos shown will be followed by a report. . The report is not to recite again the contents of the tape but to meet the following criteria:

  • An evaluation of the communication value of this tape with relation to content presentation and variety.
    Comments on the following;
  • Information gained that was not previously understood as to the content and nature of other faiths. Means of reaching out to people of other faiths either through information, technique or means of communication.
  • A significant lesson learnt personally from listening to the ta
Major Paper

Each student will be required to select a topic and develop a paper to be completed and handed in by March lst 2001. The paper will follow guidelines outlined in an appendix on the subject. It is possible to also on consultation with the lecturer to pursue other lines but this can only be done after consultation.

The paper will be developed along the following lines:
  • The student is to choose a suitable project where his Church or organization come become involved with social outreach.

  • A presentation is to be prepared as to how he or she will convince the other members of the Church or the organization that this is a relevant activity which will further the evangelistic and Church building ministry of the group. Principles are to be given from the Bible in the teaching of the Scripture, the examples of biblical leaders and then contemporary activity .

  • The chosen group will be given a brief description and a plan drawn up as to what the immediate activity will be and how this will contribute on to the eventual sustainability of what is being done in building character, encouraging hard work, working on sound lines and moving then on to social and economic stability.

  • Following the plan there are to be detailed the first few steps of how this will be implemented with relation to personnel, physical facilities, finances and organization.
