Vancouver to London (Gatwick)

The booking agent said this Transat flight is $800 less than Air Canada and we soon knew why! Seats, 3 rows of 3 with an aisle which only one person can navigate at the side. Food came in Mc Donald・s style paper cartons but otherwise we fared well enough arriving half an hour early at 07.00 to be met by our friend Arthur, taken to his house in the country beyond in the village of Rusper. We noted that Thomas Cook does have a front cabin with 3 x 2 seats across so may try to upgrade for the return flight in October. A very pleasant English day to greet us in .England・s green and pleasant land・ as Wordsworth describes it. Horsham on country fair days bustling and busy so the needed cell phone chip was easily procured keeping us in the modern communications world for the time of our sojourn here. A picnic to enjoy the rhododendrons rounded out the day.

Sunday began for Janette with a visit to the local Parish church as Arthur is a very loyal and supportive man of his village doings. The local co operative shop which contains the local Post Office is another of his interests. Going up town we passed a horse and carriage with two beautiful animals controlled by a person who has made a hobby of having his own 2 and 4 horse teams!

Colin joined Jenny and Arthur at the Horsham Baptist Church for their first Sunday of the month seekers service. The subject was Is Jesus the Only Way. This was answered strongly in the affirmative supported by interesting video clips from old Billy Graham presentations, one going back to the Wembly Crusades. Interestingly these had been gleaned from a web site whose main interest was anti Billy Graham for his ecumenical interests which drew many Churches some of whom were deemed liberal by web site sponsors hence an undesirable association. But here used to illustrate the meaning and worth of the Gospel. This church has an ambitious building plan to demolish the existing little brick hall and build a more appropriate 1 million pound two storied structure. The idea is to remain in the Community and develop a holistic approach which will contribute to the total needs of the area. The architect a member of the local congregation came back to lunch with us which was a very good spread in a classic Sunday lunch style.

Hong Kong Re union

Later in the afternoon Nick and Sue Baldwin and the Dickson・s adopted Chinese daughter came making for a joyous Hong Kong reunion with shared memories and updates on friends remembered and kept up with from that period 1984- 1995 when we were in Hong Kong.

Nick and Sue are active in a very avant garde Anglican group that meets in a school and has a café style approach to attract interested people. It has worked well although their concern is that the primary target group of totally outside people has not been as effective as hoped. Many have come but most are those who are looking for a more relevant church so are type of transfer growth people who are nominally members of other Churches. Reaching those totally outside remains a formidable challenge despite changes in approach. There is a drop in section where you can drink coffee read newspapers and listen to periodic sound bite style presentations of the gospel. Then there is another auditorium where more serious teaching style presentations are made.
